The Red Army - vast numbers of khaki infantry backed by the T-34, the tank that arguably won the war of production.
Soviet infantry wore a khaki-brown pullover tunic (the gimnasterka) with a peaked field cap or, in winter, a fur ushanka, and fought in numbers no other army on this list can match. Armour is the other half of the identity: the sloped, simple T-34 in its matte green paint became the most-produced tank of the war, and winter campaigns saw both infantry and vehicles whitewashed straight over their base colours. It is a genuinely large-scale painting project if you lean into the numbers, and a satisfying one to batch paint - a consistent khaki-green base colour covers most of a platoon, leaving the winter whitewash and the tank green as the two real decisions.
