The Emperor's personal guardians - a tiny army of golden giants where every model is a centrepiece.
The Custodes are the smallest collection in Warhammer 40,000 by model count and the largest by presence. A full force can be a few dozen figures, each one taller and more ornate than a Space Marine, joined by grav-tanks, jetbikes and the silent, black-armoured Sisters of Silence. That suits some painters perfectly and frustrates others. There is no rank-and-file to blast out in an evening; every model is an afternoon. In exchange you get an army that is finished quickly in absolute terms and looks extraordinary on the shelf. Gold is the whole identity, so it is worth settling on your gold recipe first - bright and clean, or dark and antique - before you commit the squad.
On the table: Extremely elite: very few models, each one hard to remove, comfortable in melee and unbothered by being outnumbered.
