Kill Team is Games Workshop's skirmish game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Instead of an army you field a single squad — typically six to fourteen operatives — on a small, dense board. That makes it the cheapest and quickest way into the hobby: one box is a complete, playable force, and a whole team is a weekend's painting rather than a winter's.
It is a different game with its own rulebook, not a smaller version of 40k. Operatives act individually rather than as units, each moving and shooting on its own initiative, and cover, concealment and line of sight matter far more than they do at army scale. One model dying is a real loss rather than a rounding error.
(Looking for the 2019 documentary of the same name? That's a film — this page is about the Warhammer game.)
They share a setting, a scale and — mostly — the same miniatures. Kill Team boxes are Warhammer 40,000 models, and the great majority can be fielded in a 40k army too: Ork Kommandos are Orks, Kasrkin are Astra Militarum, Corsair Voidscarred are Aeldari. That is why every team here is filed under its parent army, and why a Kill Team box is a cheap way to find out whether you enjoy painting a faction before committing to an army of them.
The rules do not carry across. A Kill Team box is a legal Kill Team roster out of the box; in 40k those same models are simply a unit, costed in points like any other. For the 40k route instead, a Combat Patrol is the equivalent starting box — bigger, more expensive, and a small army rather than a squad.
One team box and the rules. The starter set above bundles two teams, the rules and the terrain together, which is the cheapest complete route in; a single team box assumes you have someone to play against and a board to play on. Beyond that it is the usual hobby kit — clippers, glue, and six to a dozen paints, which our painting difficulty ratings break down per faction.
